Meeting the NGSS: Field Forces
COURSE DESCRIPTIONNewton’s Law of Gravitation and Coulomb’s Law describe and predict the gravitational and electrostatic forces between objects. In this module, we will explore how mathematical representations of these laws describe these field force interactions both quantitatively and conceptually.

KNOWLEDGE-SKILLS-MINDSET to be gained by participating:
Knowledge:
Skills:
Mindset: Teachers believe that student understanding of physics laws can be achieved through the careful development of mathematical representations and models.
Knowledge:
- Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation and Coulomb’s Law provide the mathematical models to describe and predict the effects of gravitational and electrostatic forces between distant objects. (DCI PS2.B)
- Forces at a distance are explained by fields (gravitational, electric, and magnetic) permeating space that can transfer energy through space. (DCI PS2.B)
- Strategies for effective teaching of the use of mathematical representations of phenomena to describe explanations.
Skills:
- Teachers will be able to identify the disciplinary core ideas (DCI), crosscutting concepts, and engineering practices that make up NGSS performance standard HS-PS2-4.
- Teachers will be able to effectively implement talk moves to guide students to understand the mathematical models which describe the 2 field forces laws.
- Teachers will be able to select effective teaching strategies for student understanding of mathematical representations and models of field forces.
Mindset: Teachers believe that student understanding of physics laws can be achieved through the careful development of mathematical representations and models.
