Course: Planning the Heart of a Physics Lesson (Part 2)
In this module, we will delve deeper into discourse and how it can be successfully applied in the physics classroom. We will first hone in on teacher talk moves that up student communication while also helping students engage with more rigorous content. We will do this by looking at how discourse can continue to play a role even when teaching more difficult concepts of work and energy in addition to weaving in how not to lose the momentum of student discourse and rigor when you need to address mathematics (formulas). We will then focus on assessment and how discourse can be used to assess content knowledge in addition to how the level of discourse in the classroom may influence the types of questions on a written assessment. Objectives:
How to maintain the rigor of discourse between the hook and summary of a lesson.
The difference between a rigorous physics lesson rich in discourse with another.
How to keep discourse rich when working with students to solve problems that are calculation-intense.
How to assess student learning in the discourse-rich environment.
How to fairly assess students based on the level of discourse in your class.
